Coaching should be fun…
One of the things I love having in my studio is this speech that my daughter Scarlet wrote for me in 2013 when she was just eight. I was holding the first get-together for all the coaches in my team at Firefly and had been involving her in what I was doing as I often did (partly inevitable if you are a single parent and work from home, made more fun if your job involves post-it notes and fun things!).
It was an exciting time because we hadn’t all met together in person before and Scarlet knew that I was looking forward to meeting everyone and helping them to connect. I can’t remember if she asked me if she could write the speech or if I asked her if she wanted to help, but either way she ended up writing this inspirational, motivating and powerful speech to rally the team to action. She never ceases to amaze me with what she comes up with - I’ve often told her that she must have been here before!
Part of what I loved about what she wrote at the time, was that she was clearly picking up a lot about my working world and what mattered to me and her values were shining through. Coaching is fun and it does change people’s lives. I am beyond fortunate to spend my working days helping people to create positive change and a lot of the time we have a lot of fun.
I’ve always wanted to inspire Scarlet and to help her see that anything is possible and to role model being a female entrepreneur. Things have come full circle this year as she is currently working as a marketing and social media apprentice, working with my team to help bring insights and to grow awareness of my work. I love having her involved in my working world as well as home, and hope that, whatever career path she chooses, she will benefit from helping me and my team, as much as we benefit from her being involved. Love you SB!
Here’s the speech (sadly without the spelling or handwriting of an 8 year-old):
In Firefly business I think coaching people should be fun, entertaining and happy. People should enjoy and find coaching fun and they should go home thinking “Oh, I think I’ve done good work today and made lots of changes in people’s lives and made me and other peoples’ lives much more happier.”
