Living with purpose and intention

The start of a new year often brings with it a flurry of resolutions, grand plans to change everything overnight and transform into a “better” version of ourselves. But let’s be honest: life isn’t that simple. And maybe that’s why resolutions often feel so heavy, steeped in guilt and pressure. Instead of fixating on sweeping promises, what if we focused on living with purpose and intention instead?

When we set intentions, we shift the focus away from rigid outcomes and towards what brings us fulfilment. It’s less about achieving milestones and more about asking, ”What do I want my life to feel like?” This question leads us to purpose, our personal “why” that gives meaning to what we do and how we grow.

What does living with purpose mean?

Purpose doesn’t have to mean one grand, life-defining mission. It can show up in smaller, quieter ways. For example, finding joy in creativity, strengthening relationships, or learning something new can all be purposeful pursuits. When we take time to reflect on what lights us up and why, we naturally start making choices that feel more aligned with who we really are.

For me, the start of the year is always an opportunity to pause and ask myself: ”What do I want to embrace this year?” I often frame this around themes rather than rigid resolutions. In the past, these themes have included “joy”, “nourish” and even “the year of me”. These guiding principles help me focus on what truly matters, without the weight of trying to fix everything at once.

What does living with purpose feel like?

When we live with purpose and intention, we acknowledge that progress is rarely straightforward. Some goals take time to unfold, while others evolve or even fall away as life changes. And that’s okay. By focusing on the bigger picture of our purpose, we free ourselves from the need to have everything figured out immediately.

Maybe your year hasn’t started with the “big reset” that January is so famous for. Perhaps your vision board isn’t finished, your plans are still forming, or you haven’t decided what your intentions will be. That’s fine. Real growth happens in small, consistent steps, not in grand leaps.

Living with purpose and intention isn’t a quick fix, it’s a long-term commitment to yourself. It’s about aligning your actions with what feels purposeful, one step at a time. This approach allows us to adapt as life throws its inevitable curveballs while still staying connected to what matters most.

So this year, let go of the pressure to “fix” everything. Instead, embrace the opportunity to live with purpose and intentionality. Take small steps. Make gentle shifts. And show yourself the kind of compassion you’d offer to a friend.

Because progress doesn’t have to be perfect - it just has to be yours.

As you reflect on your own journey of living with purpose and intention and discovering what truly matters, it can sometimes help to have a little guidance along the way.
